Sing
Zechariah
© Carolyn Randall
Can be sung to the tune:
"Oh Come All Ye Faithful"
Oh, come Jewish remnant, Zechariah's calling
Oh come see your Savior and your glorious King!
Strengthen your hearts to go complete God's temple.
Go build now for the future, not by might nor by power,
But by my Spirit God says to Zerubbabel.
Teach
Oh, come Jewish remnant, Zechariah’s calling: Who is Zechariah and why is he calling the Jewish remnant?
Zechariah is also a prophet to the Jewish remnant at the same time as Haggai. He encourages them to rebuild the temple also, but he does it in a different way,
Oh come see your Savior and your glorious King! Why is he saying this?
Zechariah is encouraging them to rebuild the temple by helping them see what God will do through the coming Savior and King. God has given Zechariah visions of the Savior and King and though the people did not have these visions, Zechariah is telling them in detail about these visions to encourage them.
Strengthen your hearts to go complete God’s temple: Why did Zechariah say this?
Life was not easy, and the people were discouraged. Zechariah knew they needed to be strengthened with hope in their hearts.
Go build now for the future, not by might nor by power: What does it mean “not to build by might nor by power?”
The strength they needed to finish the task God gave them was not something they could do just by their own physical ability.
But by my Spirit God says to Zerubbabel: Why did God say this to Zerubbabel?
Zerubbabel is the governor leading them in this rebuilding. and God is reminding to lead the people in depending on God’s Spirit to give them the strength to complete this task. This is how God’s work is done.
Preparing: God is reminding His people through whom the Savior will come to look to Him for strength to do what He asks of them in rebuilding the temple.
Pictures: Zechariah has visions of the Savior coming both as Savior and as King.
