From Obadiah to EdomWho was Obadiah and who are the people of Edom?

Obadiah was a prophet of Judah who spoke to the people of Edom, who were descendants of Esau.

Descendants of EsauWho was Esau?

He was the older brother of Jacob. The descendants of Esau were enemies of the descendants of Jacob living in Judah.

For violence toward Judah, you toutWhat was the violence and what does tout mean?

When Judah was attacked by the Babylonians the people of Edom came to help destroy Judah and steal everything they could. Tout means to promote in a bad way. Because of their pride they thought they were better than the people of Judah and promoted violence toward Judah and were very happy to be a part of the destruction of Judah.

You’ll be wiped out: What would happen to Edom?

Edom’s pride and violence led to their fall. They were overtaken by the Babylonians and generations later there were no more Edomites. While Obadiah prophesied doom for Edom, he prophesied that Judah would be restored to their land.

Preparing: God is faithful to His promises and is bringing judgment to those who in pride tried to destroy Judah through whom the Savior would come.

Picture: As the pride of Edom is brought down, the Savior will confront pride and injustice and bring hope and healing.
