Exodus

Can be sung to the tune:
"Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory" without the chorus

In Exodus God said through Moses, "Let My people go!”
Pharaoh answered nine times, “No, no, no!”
Pharaoh learned in a very hard way;
It does not pay to disobey.

In Exodus God said through Moses, “Have no God’s but Me.
A holy nation I want you to be.
The ark and the tabernacle are to help you know,
The LORD God is with you everywhere you go.”

In Exodus God said through Moses, “Let My people go!” Why did God say that?

Pharaoh was treating Israel’s descendants as slaves in Egypt.   You may read or recall the story of Joseph and how he and his brothers all came to Egypt. (The Jesus Storybook Bible, p.76-83) They grew into many people and the new leader who did not know Joseph was very harsh and made them slaves. Joseph’s father was name was changed from Jacob to Israel (Gen. 32:28). and his descendants were called Israelites who became the nation of Israel. God had chosen these descendants to be “His people.”

Who was Moses?

Do you remember the story of Moses the Jewish baby hidden in the basket and found and adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter? You can read about this in Exodus 2:1-10. God protected Moses from the wicked Pharaoh and prepared him to lead the people from slavery.

Pharaoh answered nine times, No no no: Who was Pharaoh and who was he talking to?

Pharaoh was the new leader in Egypt who did not know Joseph. God was asking Pharaoh through Moses and Pharaoh was telling Moses, NO over and over. Nine times Pharaoh told Moses, no.

Pharaoh learned in a very hard wayit does not pay to disobey: What were the results of Pharaoh saying no to God?

Each time Pharaoh said no the nation of Egypt suffered from plagues sent by God. The last plague took the life of every oldest son in the home where blood was not put on the doorpost.

Have no God’s but Me: What does this mean?

God gave 10 commandments to Moses to give to the Israelites. The very first of the Ten commandments is, “You shall have no other gods before[me.” One of the most important things God wants us to know is that He is always with us and He wants us to trust Him. If we put our trust in our money or our jobs or ANYTHING or ANYONE more than we trust God, those things can become like a God to us. God so much wants us to trust Him and know He is always working on our behalf to help us know Him and become like Him.

A holy nation I want you to beWho was suppose to be a holy nation and how could they be a holy nation?

The descendants of Israel, the Jewish people were chosen to live in such a way that people all over the whole earth would know of the holiness and greatness of God. God gave them specific instructions on how to do that. We will talk more about this in the next book of the Bible, Leviticus.

The ark and the tabernacle are to help you know the Lord God is with you everywhere you goHow did the ark and the tabernacle help them know God was with them?

The ark was a gold covered wooden chest to hold the ten commandments, a visable reminder of God’s commands.  The details are in Exodus 25:10-22.

The tabernacle was a portable earthly place for the people to meet with God while they were wandering in the wilderness. Details of the tabernacle are in Exodus 25:8-27, 36-38.

Preparing: The descendants of Abraham were becoming a nation through whom the Savior would come.

Pictures: The Passover Lamb whose blood was put on the door post for protection, is a picture of Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. See John 1:29

More to talk About:

We do not have the ark and tabernacle.  How do we know God is with us now?

The Holy Spirit is living inside of those who put their trust in Jesus—and we have God’s promises to us in His Word.

As his people were wandering in the wilderness God tested them to help them grow in trusting Him. Experiences we have in our lives are opportunities to grow in trusting God as we obey Him by faith that what He says is true.

Pharaoh learned a very hard way it does not pay to disobey: Jesus Storybook Bible pp. 84-91 lists all the plagues in the story.

The Lord God is with you everywhere you go: The Jesus Storybook Bible pp. 92-102 this mentions other ways God let the Israelites know he was with them in Exodus including a cloud by day and pillar of fire by night, and the crossing the Red Sea miracle and His provision of manna, quail, and water.

What the Bible is All about Bible Handbook for Kids, p.36 or What the Bible Is All About for Young Explorers p.40. gives four pictures pointing to Christ in Exodus.
