1 & 2 Kings

Can be sung to the tune: We Three Kings

First and Second Kings do tell
the glory of Israel and then why she fell.
Wise King Solomon had a big problem,
his wives turned his heart from God.
Oh No!
The nation was split due to apostacy,
Though Elijah, Elisha, and prophets did plea,
Israel leading then Judah proceeding
were carried into captivity.

I and 2 Kings do tell the glory of Israel and then why she fellWhat does it mean that Israel fell?  The nation was divided and most of the time did not have kings who followed God.

Wise King Solomon had a big problem:  If he was wise why did he have a big problem?   Even wise people are sometimes unwise and chose not to obey God in an area of their life.  Being disobedient always hurts us and often others too.

His wives turned his heart from GodWhy did his wives turn his heart from God?  King Solomon chose to disobey God and marry women who did not worship the one true God, but worshipped other gods.  God knew if he married them his heart would be pulled away from the one true God.    See  1 Kings 11: 1-4.  Verse 4 says," As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods."

Oh No, The nation was split due to apostasy:  What is apostasy?  It means they did not follow or obey God.  What does “the nation was split” mean?  The nation of Israel was divided into two nations: the northern kingdom of Israel was made up of 10 tribes and the southern kingdom of Judah made up of 2 tribes, Judah and Benjamin.

Though Elijah, Elisha, and Prophets did plea: Who are Elijah, Elisha and Prophets?   The prophets were men called by God to speak His words to the people.   God’s Spirit enabled them to do this.  Elijah and Elisha are the main ones written about in I and II Kings, and other prophets that we will learn more about later are mentioned in I and II Kings.  What does plea mean?  To plea means to talk very strongly, almost like begging the people to turn back to God and obey Him.

Israel leading then Judah proceeding were carried into captivity:  What does this mean?  In 721 BC the Assyrians captured Israel and then in 586 BC the Babylonians captured Judah, so they were no longer nations with their own king, but they were ruled by other nations.

Prepare: Though God is disciplining Judah for sin, all through the captivity he is preserving a faithful remnant who will be brought out of captivity and return into the land of Israel and through them the Messiah will be born.

Picture: In 2 Kings chapter 5, Naaman was cleansed from his leprosy by humbling himself and washing in a river. This is a picture of how Jesus would wash away sins and cleanse the hearts of those who come humbly to Him in faith.
